Applied Human Factors will demonstrate some of its innovative new assistive technology products including 1) programs that have been shown to significantly increase typing speed - especially for people using switch scanning; 2) a program that offers a new alternative input strategy for people who now are either scanning or using a standard pointer, but not very effectively; 3) programs that have been shown to improve spelling accuracy by 100%+ in children and adults with learning disabilities; and 4) a new augmentative communication and writing program that lets you "type" by selecting words instead of letters and reduces the number of required clicks in a sentence to 2-3 per word.

During university lectures, students are given vast amounts of information which they are expected to learn. If they can't effectively note take, then how can they learn this information? Audio Notetaker, is a completely different approach to note taking which is particularly great for students who struggle with reading and writing. It visualizes speech from audio recordings, allowing students to annotate spoken phrases with color, import presentation slides, organize their recordings and add textual notes. The tool also helps the organization of notes and can be used in conjunction with numerous other software and hardware devices. Assistive technology (AT) can do much to support diverse learners in the areas of communication, behavior, play and learning. This training is focused on giving participants an opportunity to learn about AT tools and learn strategies to create a preschool classroom or home environment designed to engage all learners, ages 0-5 years. We will discuss low-tech tools in the areas of communication, behavior and play, then present a sampling of iPAD/iPOD apps for early learning. You will leave with a basic understanding of AT, possible funding sources, and the benefits of and need to consider appropriate modifications and adaptations through AT to support all young children.

This presentation will provide the attendees with resources and ideas for 50 free or low-cost assistive technology tools they can implement quickly. It is estimated that more than 225,000 Californians are living with a traumatic brain injury, and an increasing number of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are adapting to living with a TBI.
This webinar is for organizations who are working to meet the unique needs of consumers with a brain injury. Medicare instituted a competitive bidding process for vendors of home healthcare supplies and equipment beginning January 1, 2011. The pilot project (currently running in 9 municipalities including the Riverside/San Bernardino area) is scheduled to expand later this year to several more California cites. It has created many headaches for consumers, forcing them to switch providers, rely on out-of-state vendors, experience longer hospital stays and more. This webinar will explain how competitive bidding has affected consumers, what HR 1041 will do to correct the problem and how consumers can get involved.

ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps is a specialized, fully accessible mapping service that provides "narrative maps" to Blind travelers. This service is similar to Google or Yahoo Directions for sighted drivers or pedestrians, but customized to meet the unique needs of Blind pedestrians. We offer indoor and outdoor landmark-to-landmark walking directions (route descriptions), point of interest information, virtual tours, and other features. These narratives include cues that Blind travelers rely upon, such as tactile, auditory, proprioceptive, and distance cues, allowing blind pedestrians to follow descriptions comfortably and accurately. Discharge planning is an important part for anyone who is placed in an institution. People who use Assistive Technology have another area of planning that needs to be considered when an individual plans to transition from facility life to community living. Often the needs in a facility of an individual are met differently than they are in the community so these considerations and others must be considered when engaging in effective discharge planning and implementation. Kern Assistive Technology Center has participated as part of a discharge planning team for an individual who resided in an Sub Acute Wing of a Hospital in Kern County. Because these students cannot read a print book, they require books in alternative formats such as DAISY and BRF (digital Braille).
